Sunbelt release update to its award winning Vipre antivirus

Posted on April 26, 2011 by The HeroComments Off

This afternoon Sunbelt today released update 2 for Vipre
antivirus.

Here is the official announcement http://supportforums.sunbeltsoftware.com/messageview.aspx?catid=23&threadid=7696&enterthread=y

For all of my customers that have Vipre running, the update
is safe to install and run. When it instructs you to remove Spybot search and
destroy, do not uninstall it, it will prompt you to remove it, twice, then it
will install.

The reason why Spybot is safe is that The Computer Hero does
not turn on it’s real time scanning. Spybot and Spyware blaster are both used passively
to provide you with a layered protection to keep you safe.

IMPORTANT – time to update links to Facebook

Posted on February 4, 2011 by The HeroComments Off

Facebook is now allowing you to connect securely to them via HTTPS protocol. You should delete your old links to facebook and create new ones to the HTTPS://www.facebook.com
The reason for the change is to prevent hackers from “listening in” while you are on Facebook. without the encrypted connection, hackers can view everything that you are viewing if you are on an unsecured connection.
Sometime in the future they will be updating the site so that it is always secure, but why wait?

PCs hacked from mobile phones

Posted on January 21, 2011 by The HeroComments Off

This is so simple we should have seen it coming. The hack tricks plug and play into thinking the phone is a wireless keyboard / mouse, then simply send the keystrokes to the computer as though you were typing it.

Podcasts will be returning next week

Posted on May 11, 2010 by The HeroComments Off

The Computer Hero Radio Show is officially off the air for the summer, while we at The Computer Hero make some staffing changes and get caught up on projects.
However, we have heard from many of our listeners, and have decided to continue the show via Podcasts over the summer. I have just ordered the mics and recording equipment, and will have the first podcast edition up next week. If anyone has any ideas, or suggestions for upcoming shows, please use let me know.
Without the time constraints of the radio station, the show can streach a bit further, but dont worry, I have no intentions of rambling for long periods of time, I know your time is limited too. I respect that, and thank you for listening.

If you have not done so yet, you can subscribe to the show via itunes at http://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/the-computer-hero-radio-show/id328003378

Webcam Down :(

Posted on May 7, 2010 by The HeroComments Off

WELL, THIS IS EMBARRASSING :(
Sorry but due to an internal server failure at the Hero Cave, the Hero Cam is not currently functioning.
I hope to have it repaired in the next 2-3 weeks, there are just too many higher priority items ahead of the cam in the queue at the moment.

free backup thanks to skydrive

Posted on April 13, 2010 by The HeroComments Off

After seeing that www.live.com has upped the SkyDrive to 25gb, I started thinking, that is large enough for an average person’s  documents and and photos. A quick google search later, and I came across Nysic’s solution for automatically backing up your documents. This is by no means as good or as automatic as carbonite, but it is free.

New AVG update

Posted on November 4, 2009 by The HeroComments Off

If you use AVG free antivirus software, then you should be getting a pop-up in the next few days telling you to upgrade to version 9. Just like every other AVG upgrade, the page the pop-up takes you to does not contain the free download but tries to get you to buy the paid version. If you want the free version, I have it available for download http://www.thecomputerhero.com/downloads/ . The file looks to be version 8.37 but it is the installer for version 9.
At this time, The Computer Hero no longer recommends using the free AVG.
We strongly recommend purchasing Vipre antivirus to keep your computer safe. We do however understand that some people do not see the value in purchasing, or cannot afford antivirus. If you find yourself in that boat, we recommend uninstalling AVG from add/remove programs and installing Microsoft Security Essentials, which we also have available for download.

So far the reviews of MSE are favorable, and it has been certified by ICSA.
if you don’t want to pay for antivirus, then it looks like MSE and windows defender is a solid solution.
You can find the download for MSE in our downloads section at www.thecomputerhero.com

Posted on October 19, 2009 by The Hero1 Comment

Microsoft has announced that version 9 will be the last version of a program which has been part of the Microsoft family since the DOS days. Yes – Microsoft Works is officially dead.
Office 2010 is currently out in for a limited technical preview. When it is fully released new computers, which used to ship with works, will be coming with office 2010 started edition for free. Yes- you know there is a catch. The starter edition will have limited functionality version of Word and Excel, both of which will be ad-sponsored.
